Your Complete Guide to Renting a Car in Malaga – Everything You Need to Know

To rent a car in Málaga with Miami Car Hire you need to be at least 23, have held your driving licence for 2+ years, and bring your licence, passport or ID and a credit card (Visa, Mastercard or Amex) in the main driver’s name. Málaga is the gateway to the Costa del Sol and the best base for exploring Andalusia by car: Ronda, Nerja, Antequera and Granada are all within roughly 90 minutes’ drive. This guide is written by the team at Miami Car Hire, a local company specialised in car rental Malaga, operated by Miami Movilidad S.L. and member of the ZontuRent and AECA-FENEVAL car rental associations. Every rental condition below comes from our own terms, and every traffic rule from the DGT, Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic.

Do you need a rental car in Málaga?
Not if you are only staying in the historic centre: it is compact, largely pedestrianised and well served by EMT Málaga buses, the metro and the Cercanías commuter train to the airport and Fuengirola. A car becomes worthwhile as soon as you plan to leave the city.
A rental car makes sense if you want to:
- Visit inland towns such as Ronda, Antequera or Frigiliana, where public transport is infrequent.
- Reach places with no direct train, like El Torcal, the Caminito del Rey or the Nerja Caves.
- Travel with children, luggage or sports equipment.
- Combine several Costa del Sol towns in a single day.
If you only need a car for part of your stay, book it just for those days and pick it up at the station or have it delivered to your hotel.
Where can you pick up a rental car in Málaga?
Most visitors collect their car on arrival at Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP), but it is not the only option. These are the handover points we offer and what each one costs:
| Pick-up point | How it works | Cost |
| Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) | A team member meets you at the terminal car park | Free, 9:00–21:00 |
| María Zambrano station (AVE and Cercanías) | Handover at the station car park | Free, 9:00–21:00 |
| Fuengirola office | Pick-up and return at our office | Included |
| Málaga Cruise Terminal | Handover at the port | €15 drop-off / €15 collection |
| Hotel or other address | Delivery and collection on request | From €20 |
Outside office hours we can still deliver or collect the car for a surcharge of €10 to €30, depending on the time slot. More details for each point: rent a car Malaga airport, car hire Malaga train station, car hire Malaga port and car hire Fuengirola.
What documents do you need to rent a car in Málaga?
- Driving licence valid in Spain and held for at least 2 years. EU and EEA licences are valid as they are. If your licence was issued outside the EU, we recommend carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) with it and checking the DGT’s guidance for your country.
- Passport or national ID card, not expired.
- Credit card (Visa, Mastercard or Amex) in the main driver’s name. It is required at pick-up even if you take zero-excess cover.
- Booking confirmation, printed or on your phone.
All documents must be valid on the day of pick-up. Each additional driver must also show their own licence and ID.
How to rent a car in Málaga, step by step

- Return the car at the agreed time and place with the same fuel level. There is a 2-hour grace period; after that, an extra day is charged.

H2: Do you need extra insurance when renting a car in Málaga?
Every Miami Car Hire rental includes comprehensive insurance with an excess: compulsory and supplementary third-party liability, legal defence, partial damage cover and 24-hour roadside assistance. The excess is the maximum you pay if the car is damaged, and it is held as a deposit on your credit card until you return the car.
| Vehicle group (shown on your booking) | Maximum excess | Zero-excess cover |
| 500, A, C | €500 | €7/day (min €30, max €100) |
| 500C, F, P, CL | €600 | €8/day (min €40, max €110) |
| 50CA, DA, CLA, EA | €700 | €9/day (min €50, max €120) |
| E, EAH, FA, SUV, SUA | €800 | €10/day (min €60, max €130) |
| PA, HA, SUA2 | €900 | €11/day (min €70, max €150) |
| J | €1,000 | €12/day (min €80, max €170) |
| JLA | €1,200 | €14/day (min €100, max €190) |
Zero-excess cover removes the deposit and also covers windows, glass, locks, tyres and punctures. Maximums apply per contract or per month.
What no insurance covers: lost keys, underbody and clutch damage, damage to the radio or upholstery, using the wrong fuel (from €700), driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, missing equipment such as the spare tyre, vest or V16 beacon, and any damage not recorded in an accident report.
Using third-party excess insurance or your credit card’s cover? It works by reimbursement: we still hold the deposit, and if there is damage you pay the excess and claim it back from your insurer afterwards.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Arriving with a debit card instead of a credit card in the main driver’s name.
- Driving off without photographing existing damage.
- Returning the car more than 2 hours late, which adds a full extra day.
- Putting in the wrong fuel: it is not covered by insurance and costs at least €700.
- Driving to Gibraltar or Portugal without authorisation, which voids the insurance and roadside assistance.
- Leaving valuables in sight inside the car.
